Many homeowners wonder how they can revamp their existing landscape, how they can add value to their home without the heavy investment that renovations require. The simplest and most convenient manner in which to do this is to add outdoor lighting fixtures. By emphasizing the most important areas of your yard you can raise the value of your home while also adding to the curb appeal that the exterior of your home has to offer. Finding the right outdoor fixture requires a lot of planning. While less than an entire home renovation, the process nonetheless requires precise calculations of the future savings that certain light fixtures might offer compared to their initial investment costs, as well as verification that the possible outdoor lighting fixtures are in compliance with the Dark Sky Movement, and that the possible outdoor lighting fixtures which you are considering are able to light the right areas of your home.
By modifying outdoor illumination to work with the Dark Sky Movement, homeowners are enjoying a more efficient use of their lights. They can receive the same amount of lumens with half or one third of the wattage. New outdoor lighting fixtures are being produced by manufacturers which work in compliance with the Dark Sky Movement. Homeowners can even change current light fixtures into a Dark Sky fixture for a nominal fee. While not an official government standard, lighting fixtures are being evaluated in terms of their compliance and those which fall within the category of compliance are offered a seal of approval that states that the fixture meets all requirements. Over seventy five lighting manufacturers enjoy the seal of approval.
If you want to light a large area, say the backyard for when you let the dogs out at night, spotlights or area lights are a good choice. Spotlights can be used anywhere you need a large amount of light, are typically installed on a high point of a house or garage so the light can expand over the area. Small spotlights can be used closer to the ground to point light up, at the exterior walls of the home, a group of shrubs or a tree. Next, outdoor landscape lighting is about highlighting the best features in the yard. Its main purpose isn't really for security, however, it can help. So, the same steps can be done as with security lighting to determine your outdoor lighting needs. This time think about visual appeal, step back from the home and think about what you would like to see which areas would be best to accent. In the front yard, it may be the pathway from the driveway to the front door, the landscaping around the edge of the home, a water feature or tree. Or, in the backyard look at areas like, the patio or deck, gardens or around the pool.
