The key to outdoor lighting is accentuating the property's assets while restricting direct views into the property's faults. Of course while playing up the outdoor lighting with the assets, you want to create a logical pattern of outdoor lighting. If the cars are parked around back and the back door entrance is used but the front of the house is more attractive, there are features that will make outdoor lighting logical and reasonable while portraying the home's better features to the passing public. Manual outdoor lighting can be combined with automatic and sensor outdoor lighting. Sensor outdoor lighting is a good criminal deterrent while saving on energy costs. If the light can be seen from a common room in the house, such as a living room or a family room, the sensor will alert the occupants that there is movement on the property. Of course sensor outdoor lighting can be sensitive enough to light up every time a neighborhood cay walks by, but there is added security in being able to remotely view out a window when there is an unexpected knock at the door. Sensor outdoor lighting can make a person feel much safer when that unexpected knock comes in the darkness and they are home alone.
There are new city ordinances that are attempting to thwart these negative effects but lessening the outdoor lighting we use. Commercial and residential lighting should seek now to only shine light upon the areas seeking to be lit, not upward into the atmosphere. The Dark Sky Movement seeks only to face lighting downward, instead of above a horizontal line. This does not mean that homeowners are forced to devalue the exterior of their homes or cannot enjoy aesthetically pleasing lighting. What it does mean is that homeowners are enjoying the additional bonus of reducing energy use by using lower wattage bulbs to achieve the same outdoor lighting they had enjoyed before. Before this movement, homeowners would be forced to implement outdoor lighting which opened at the top and bottom, requiring a higher wattage bulb. Now, with no light meant to shine from the bottom of the fixture, the wattage can be reduced.
Benefits of Outdoor lighting for security. Lights have always been a biggest enemy of burglars. Good outdoor lighting provides safety and security apart from giving warmth and welcoming look to our homes and gardens. Outdoor lighting around our home will make it a safer place to walk after dark, helping to deter crime. Security experts have found that outdoor lights are the most effective security systems available. Outdoors security lighting gets so easily blended with our outside decor that they provide a hidden way of discouraging burglars in further advancing their act. Outdoor light are much cheaper way of providing security compare to other electronic security product like an intruder alarm systems. A motion detecting outdoor security light can even save on energy by providing on demand security lighting needs.
