It is very important for all homeowners to ensure that they are modifying their outdoor lighting so that all fixtures and lights are in compliance with the measures in Lighting Dark Sky movements. This movement focuses on altering our outdoor lighting so that we limit the amount of glare and reflection from our high level lights off of the ground and up into the sky. There was a lot of initial debate about whether the orange overture in the sky was simply an annoyance to purists or whether it caused negative effects to the earth. Now we have learned that the light pollution which is at fault for the orange haze is actually destroying wildlife while also damaging our health and incurring large fees.
Outdoor lighting in your home is installed primarily for security purposes, but can also be selected and placed to add some mood or highlight the design of your home. Lights in the exterior areas of a home, such as backyards, front lawns and patios, can make the simplest of houses to the most charming abode in the neighborhood. One of the places in your house that constantly need security lighting is the garage. Make sure this area is amply covered with lighting at night. For a small garage, a single light at the center of the entrance would suffice. But for a 2-car garage or bigger areas, you should install some more. The sides of your house also need proper illumination for a similar purpose. In addition, sensors in your lighting system in these areas are a good idea if you'd like to save energy. These sensors automatically activate your lighting system when programmed according to time or when motion is detected.
The last of the tips for this type of lighting is to make sure that the placement of your lights matches the design of your yard. If you have specific focal points in your yard which deserve illumination, highlight them. Generally homeowners will think of highlighting their pathway, driveway, or front door, but do not consider highlighting their garden, a quite footpath along a fountain or trellis. These are aspects of your home upon which all eyes should be drawn as the evening hours approach. By emphasizing them with low voltage outdoor lighting you can increase the aesthetic quality of your home.
